Fractional CRO: Cost, Scope, and When to Hire One (2026)
What a fractional chief revenue officer owns, the $8,000 to $25,000 monthly market rate, and how the seat differs from a fractional VP of Sales or a fractional COO.
Senior revenue leadership without a $400,000 officer on payroll. Month to month. No equity. No deck.
What is a fractional CRO, and what does one cost?
A fractional CRO is a part-time chief revenue officer who owns the whole revenue line: sales, pipeline, pricing, retention, and the handoffs between them. Fractional executive seats in the US market commonly run $8,000 to $25,000 a month for ten to twenty hours a week, against a $250,000 to $400,000 package for a full-time CRO. The usual buyer is an owner doing $5M to $30M whose revenue still depends on them being in the room.

02 Why owners look for this seat
Revenue rarely breaks in one place
Owners do not go looking for a chief revenue officer. They go looking because the number stopped moving and nobody can say exactly why.
Usually it is not one hole. Lead response is slow, so good inquiries go cold. The team can set meetings but cannot hold them. Pricing has not moved in three years. The biggest customer is up for renewal and only the owner has the relationship. Each one is small. Together they are the plateau.
A VP of Sales fixes the selling. A CRO fixes the whole line.

What is a fractional CRO?
How much does a fractional CRO cost?
Fractional executive seats in the US market commonly run $8,000 to $25,000 a month for ten to twenty hours a week. A full-time CRO is usually a $250,000 to $400,000 package once base, variable, and benefits are counted, often with equity on top. My seat starts at $10,000 a month, month to month, 30 days notice, no equity.
What is the difference between a fractional CRO and a fractional VP of Sales?
Scope. A fractional VP of Sales owns the selling team: quota, pipeline, coaching, and the weekly cadence. A fractional CRO owns the whole revenue line including pricing, retention, expansion, and marketing handoff. If your problem is one team missing quota, you want the sales seat. If revenue leaks in four places, you want the revenue seat.
When should I hire a fractional CRO instead of a full-time one?
Below about $30M in revenue, a full-time CRO is usually more officer than the business needs and more cost than the number justifies. Part time fits when you need senior revenue judgment in the room for pricing, key renewals, and hiring, but not forty hours a week of it.
What does a fractional CRO actually do in the first 90 days?
Reads the pipeline and the retention math, names where revenue leaks, sets the weekly operating rhythm, and puts an owner on each number. My version of that is the 90-Day Scorecard: two weeks, $5,000 fixed, a written plan you keep whether you hire me or not.
Do I need a fractional CRO or a fractional COO?
Look at where the number breaks. If pipeline is healthy and delivery is chaotic, hire operations. If demand exists but the team cannot convert it without you in the room, hire revenue. Most owners at $5M to $30M actually break at the seam between the two, which is the seat I sit in.
Will a fractional CRO sell for me?
Not as the job. If I am carrying your deals, we have built the same dependency you hired me to remove, just wearing a different name. I will get on the calls that matter early, then build the bench that runs them without me.
What size company hires a fractional CRO?
The usual band is $5M to $30M in revenue. Below that, the owner is normally still the best salesperson in the building. Above it, a full-time revenue officer is generally justified.
What are the contract terms?
Month to month, 30 days notice, no equity, no long-term agreement, no deck. If the seat is not earning its fee, you should be able to end it in a sentence.
What happens on the first call?
Thirty minutes. You bring the bottleneck. I tell you what I would do in your seat. Whether we work together or not.
