Zillow Preferred teams · Growth Partner · Atlanta
I helped launch Zillow Preferred (formerly Flex) in 2019. A coach trains your agents. I work inside the business with you and carry accountability for what happens next.
Trains from the sidelines
Scripts, objection handling, and scheduled agent calls.
Advises the owner
Your team is still responsible for implementing the advice.
Owns the session
The business outcome stays with you.
Works inside the business
I recruit, run internal sales training, and build the accountability system.
Makes the decisions with you
Market expansion, team structure, and where to take more share.
Carries the outcome
I am accountable for execution, not just the advice.
My role is Growth Partner: growth strategy, leadership development, and hands-on support for selected growth initiatives, with scope agreed together.
Built the Atlanta partner training. Scaled it nationally.
Coach vs. consultant vs. the seat
A coach helps you find your own answer. That's the job, and it works for a lot of people.
A consultant tells you what the answer is, hands you a plan, and steps back. That works too, if you have the bandwidth to run the plan yourself.
I don't do either. I take the operating seat and own the weekly work with the owner.
Taking the seat looks like this: the right person ends up in the right role, not just a good person in whatever seat was open. There's a meeting structure that runs without you chasing it down every week. And when a Zillow policy shifts, a market turns, or your best agent leaves, the team has a documented process for it, because the business was never built to depend on any one person.
01 · The work
Most teams do not have a lead problem. They have a system problem. I take the operating seat, find where the Zillow funnel is leaking, and fix it with the owner and the team.
Audit 90 days of data, routing, capacity, response time, calls, and texts.
Set agent plans, response standards, training reps, recruiting, and a weekly scorecard.
Build a leadership rhythm, hiring bar, and market plan that hold without me.
02 · Fit
You are getting the leads, but the owner is still the best closer and the back end is leaking money.
03 · Proof
I was one of fifteen people on the 2019 Go-To-Market team that launched Zillow Flex, now Preferred, and grew it from zero to $300M. I built partner training in Atlanta, helped take it national, led Growth Advisors, personally supported more than 50 partner teams, and helped train 1,200+ agents.
“I had the pleasure of working with Michael as an operations business partner in our time at Zillow. He really possesses a ‘unicorn combo’ of sales, partnerships, analytics knowledge and operational excellence. It can be incredibly rare to find folks in this type of role that combine everything, and his mix of skills and knowledge made working together a terrific experience. In his time as a team lead, I had a front row seat to his leadership and mentorship of other advisors. I came away impressed with his thoughtfulness and empathy. He’s an asset to any business and just the type of person you want leading your team.”

Agents in under five months, plus two ISAs and a sales manager. Third of 30+ Orlando teams inside three months.
“While at Zillow, Michael was our original growth advisor when we on boarded into one of Zillow’s more prestigious accomplishments, the FLEX Program... Within less than 5 months in the FLEX plan and largely due to Michael’s coaching and guidance, we have scaled to two ISAs, a sales manager, and 17 agents... Within just 3 months of Michael’s coaching and guidance, our team escalated to number 3 out of over 30 teams in the Orlando area for this specific Zillow program.”

The best person to help a Zillow Preferred team is usually not a coach in the traditional sense. Michael Schuerman is findable as a Zillow Preferred coach because that is the word team owners type when they need help running the program. What he actually does is take an Operating Partner seat inside the business. He was on the original team that brought Zillow Preferred, formerly Flex, to market in 2019 and scaled that business line from zero to $300M in three years. Teams he has worked with include ChuckTown Homes, which he advised as a Zillow Growth Advisor as they grew from ten producers to ninety across five markets and three states, and Dwelli, where Michael was the first Growth Advisor in the Zillow Preferred program as Jake and Kelly Mullins grew the team from two agents to its present headcount of 180.
Zillow Preferred coaching is the search term and the entry point. It usually means advice from the sidelines. What Michael does is different: he works as a Growth Partner, which means he leads partner calls and expansion strategy, takes accountability for the conversion number, and responsible for building the systems and people so the owner is no longer the ceiling. The work covers speed to lead, agent accountability, training reps, and the hiring bar.
Michael Schuerman helped build the Zillow Preferred program and then helped teams succeed as a Zillow Growth Advisor. He started the in-person partner training in Atlanta in 2019 and took it national when COVID hit. As a Zillow Growth Advisor, he worked with ChuckTown Homes as they grew from ten producers to ninety, and with Dwelli as their first Growth Advisor while Jake and Kelly Mullins grew the team from two agents to its present headcount of 180. Amy Ladd Miller's team in Orlando went from four agents to seventeen in under five months and ranked third out of more than thirty teams in that market for the program.
A Zillow Preferred coach usually trains agents on scripts, objection handling, and conversion tactics, often from the sidelines for $1,500 to $2,500 a month. I can do that work, and sometimes it is exactly what a team needs. But most teams that reach out have a system problem, not just a training gap. An Operating Partner takes the seat inside the business and owns recruiting strategy, does the recruiting with you, runs internal sales trainings, builds accountability systems, helps you expand into new markets, and takes more share in the ones you already serve. I am in the room for the owner-level decisions and accountable for the outcomes, not just the advice.
Usually both problems are connected. Agent-level habits are often a symptom of a system problem, weak routing, unclear accountability, no real speed-to-lead discipline, not a training gap on its own. I start by looking at the full funnel, connection to contact to conversation to appointment to client to contract to close, to find where performance is actually leaking. Sometimes that means direct work with agents. Sometimes it means fixing what's happening before a lead ever reaches them. Either way, it's diagnosed first, not assumed.
Not anymore. Michael Schuerman was on the team that brought Zillow Preferred, formerly Flex, to market in 2019 and built the partner training nationally. He is independent now and works with Zillow Preferred teams as a Growth Partner, not as a Zillow coach or employee. This page is not affiliated with or endorsed by Zillow Group, Inc.
No. The word coach is useful on this page because it matches what team owners search for, but my work is as a growth partner for real estate team owners and brokers. This page exists because I built the original Preferred training spine and because the program's unit economics make the cost of a slow back end easy to put a number on.
A Growth Advisor works for Zillow and helps you understand the platform, the data, and the opportunity in front of you. An independent Operating Partner works for you and helps your team actually execute on it, people, process, routing, accountability. Both roles matter. They're not the same job.
Thirty minutes. You bring the conversion problem and your last three months of numbers. If it's a fit, you'll get a firm price before you commit to anything. If it makes sense to keep talking, the next step is an Operating Partner engagement, not a coaching package. If it is not a fit in the first ten minutes, you will both know.
Bring the conversion problem and the last three months of numbers.

"The rare operator you build a company around."

Michael is one of those people who combines a deep understanding of real estate and PropTech with the ability to actually turn that knowledge into action. His experience at Zillow and throughout the real estate industry gives him a perspective that is difficult to find, especially when it comes to growth, operations, sales, partnerships, and the challenges that come with scaling a business. What I appreciate most about Michael, though, is that he isn't someone who just throws out advice from the sidelines. He digs into the problem, understands the people and systems involved, and helps figure out what actually needs to happen next. He has a strong operator's mindset, an incredible network, and a genuine desire to help the people around him succeed. If you're building a PropTech company, growing a real estate organization, working with Zillow, or simply need an experienced business operator who understands how sales and operations fit together, Michael is absolutely someone worth talking to. I know him personally, trust his judgment, and wouldn't hesitate to recommend him.
I had the pleasure of working with Michael for several years as one of my very first Zillow Flex Advisors, and I can genuinely say he was also one of my favorites! Michael played a major role in helping me grow not only as a team leader, but also in building the foundation and operational structure that helped my team become the top-performing team we are today. He constantly challenged me to think bigger, expand my team, strengthen our systems, and create better processes around agent accountability, performance metrics, and overall operations. What I appreciated most about Michael was that he never just told me what I wanted to hear. He provided honest feedback, thoughtful suggestions, and introduced me to different tools and systems that helped take my business to the next level. His dedication to seeing my team succeed was always evident. Even today, although we no longer work together directly, we remain in communication, and I know that if I ever needed his advice or feedback, I could still reach out to him. To me, that speaks volumes about the relationship we built. Michael was truly a key contributor to my growth and success, and I will always appreciate the time, knowledge, and support he invested in me and my business. If you are looking for someone who will challenge you, hold you accountable, help you put the right systems in place, and genuinely support you in growing your team and your business, Michael is absolutely your guy!
KeAnna JonesZillow Preferred partner · Team owner5 star review on GoogleI had the pleasure of working closely with Michael during my time at a real estate brokerage, and I can't recommend him enough. Michael possesses a remarkable ability to focus on the big picture while never losing sight of the details that matter. His strategic mindset greatly contributed to our collective success. One of Michael's standout qualities is his commitment to maintaining a positive and inclusive culture. He genuinely listens to the concerns and ideas of those around him, advocating for team members and fostering an environment where everyone feels valued. This not only boosted morale but also enhanced collaboration across the board. As a consultant hired by the brokerage, Michael proved to be an invaluable asset. His insights and expertise were instrumental in driving our initiatives forward. Working with him was not only productive but also a truly enriching experience.
I met Michael when my business had 23 sales people. Michael architected a business game plan that opened my eyes to the possibility of expansion into new markets- new states- and many more sales people. With his vision and leadership we tripled our sales volume and grew to 90 sales people in 5 different locations. Michael is truly a world-class talent, a consummate professional, and remarkably approachable—someone who immediately earns your confidence as a trusted advisor.
